George started vomiting and appearing weak on Thursday 18th March, 2004- he was
taken to a vet but the vet refused to treat him as the owner did not have
any money. So the owner took him to a friend who knew how to do dog first
aid. The next morning he seemed better but he wandered off.
LAWC was phoned at 10.30pm on Friday by someone who said there was a dog dying beside
the Yung Shue Long Lily Pond. We found George lying beside the pond covered
in thick wormy mud
and unable to get up, hardly able to lift his head. Presumably his vomiting
had caused him to be thirsty so he had tried to get a drink but fallen in
and had exhausted himself getting out again. With the help of passersby we
managed to get him home.

Under veterinary advice we gave him warm baths,
intravenous fluids and atropine. His temperature rose from 35.6
¢J
(hypothermic) to 38.5
¢J
(normal).

By Saturday morning he was quite a lot better but
still obviously not well so we took him to the Central Animal Hospital in
Causeway Bay.

Unfortunately he deteriorated steadily and died of kidney
failure on Wednesday morning (24th). The diagnosis was never finally
confirmed but was almost certainly an ingested poison, probably Paraquat.
